RECRUITMENT: Build Middle/High School Culture
Encourage student-led activities during the summer such as:
- A Friday morning running club to build endurance for summer/early fall marching rehearsals
- Sectional parties with parent supervision
- Opening the rehearsal hall one day a week for independent student practice — especially helpful for tuba, bari saxophone, percussion, cello, and bass players
- Guided practice sessions led by student leaders in the eyes of the community and future band families.
RETENTION: Invest in Self-Education and Self-Care
- Attend a summer workshop of your choice (I encourage everyone to attend Music for All Summer Band Camp)
- Schedule a conducting check-up — everyone needs one!
- If possible, attend your state’s summer music education convention
- Try a yoga class, tweak your workout routine, or simply take walks around your neighborhood with a friend or spouse
SUCCESS-Plan Ahead for a Smooth Start
Take time now to get organized for the upcoming school year.
- Double-check your school calendar
- Make sure all band, choir, and orchestra events are added to the official school calendar
- Send instruments out for summer repair
- Take time to visit and build relationships with your school administration and with other fine arts teachers as well as other teachers in your school
A little planning now saves time and stress later!
