RECRUITMENT: Build Middle/High School Culture

RECRUITMENT: Build Middle/High School Culture

Encourage student-led activities during the summer such as:

  • A Friday morning running club to build endurance for summer/early fall marching rehearsals
  • Sectional parties with parent supervision
  • Opening the rehearsal hall one day a week for independent student practice — especially helpful for tuba, bari saxophone, percussion, cello, and bass players
  • Guided practice sessions led by student leaders in the eyes of the community and future band families.

RETENTION: Invest in Self-Education and Self-Care

  • Attend a summer workshop of your choice (I encourage everyone to attend Music for All Summer Band Camp)
  • Schedule a conducting check-up — everyone needs one!
  • If possible, attend your state’s summer music education convention
  • Try a yoga class, tweak your workout routine, or simply take walks around your neighborhood with a friend or spouse

SUCCESS-Plan Ahead for a Smooth Start

Take time now to get organized for the upcoming school year.

  • Double-check your school calendar
  • Make sure all band, choir, and orchestra events are added to the official school calendar
  • Send instruments out for summer repair
  • Take time to visit and build relationships with your school administration and with other fine arts teachers as well as other teachers in your school

A little planning now saves time and stress later!
